PAT MONTANDON
Founder, Visionary, Peace Provocateur

Picture
In 1982 Pat Montandon had a vision (more like a nightmare) of nuclear holocaust that was so powerful and horrific she came out of it completely shaken, knowing that she had to take some kind of personal action well beyond the call of civic duty, but she had no idea what she was doing or how she was going to do it. Yet something guided her in ways she could not yet imagine—and that most people would still find beyond their wildest imagination.

At first the organization Pat founded was called Children as Teachers for Peace before it became Children As The Peacemakers, a foundation that went on to sponsor 37 international peace missions with grade-school children. Pat Montandon—an ordinary U.S. citizen with an extraordinary concern for the future of children and the planet—organized, facilitated and led the trips, along with dedicated adults and always with kids at the forefront, delivering letters written by schoolchildren, urging an end to nuclear proliferation. Pat and the children met with 26 world leaders such as:

  • China’s Premier Zhao Ziyang
  • Chancellor Helmut Kohl
  • Pope John Paul II
  • the late Indira Gandhi
  • Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland of Norway
  • Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev

Pat’s endeavors have also included delivery of food and supplies to children in Russia and Ethiopia, and other humanitarian efforts. She nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for three successive years and received the UN Peace Messenger award in 1987. Her work for peace has been honored with awards from countries around the world.
